A New Hope

I deleted an entry from 8/10 in which I wrote about neglecting this blog...but I was thinking that I could restart this blog...I need to find someone to talk to. My Yahoo is wwoo2000, send me IM if you want to participate. If you catch me online!

Another Conversation with J7.
My Brother Drops By

Conversation #1 w/ DJ Chuang

DJ's website has become a resource for me and he has extensive links to issues from BiPolar Disorder to aZn Churches, well AzN AmErIcAn Churches...he's a longtime blogger. I have not met him IRL (in real life), but he was kind enough to "chat", "IM" w/ me the other day. I plan on "talking" to him some more in the future, I hope our conversation stimulates your mind/ captures your imagination/ or is just a nice read. You can learn more about him HERE. I find myself telling people that I'll edit our conversation, but due to time constraints most of our "conversation" is below. The only thing much to my chagrin is that the smileys don't come out, so in those blank spots, it should be some kind of smiley.

wwoo2000 (08:49:57 PM): Hey DJ, (is that what people call you?)
djchuang (08:50:15 PM): yes it is, been using that name since college
wwoo2000 (08:51:36 PM): cool, I was posting on the CCR forums (its all new) not sure how its going to catch
djchuang (08:51:47 PM): i'm in process of upgrading to a new pc, transferring files from 98 to xp is difficult..
djchuang (08:51:59 PM): let's tackle a coupla of your questions tonight, then i gotta bed
wwoo2000 (08:52:16 PM): now? or after transferring files?
djchuang (08:53:16 PM): yes, multitasking now.. networking btwn xp and 98 is difficult, been browsing forums about it,
djchuang (08:53:21 PM): have to jump thru lots of hoops
djchuang (08:53:37 PM): so quicker way i'm trying is burning files onto CDs
djchuang (08:53:42 PM): and copying those over
wwoo2000 (08:54:09 PM): cool, which question did you want to tackle?
djchuang (08:54:31 PM): which ever you remember..
djchuang (08:54:38 PM): (or i can pull up the email)
wwoo2000 (08:55:38 PM): One question dealt with blogging. How did you come to blog? Back in 99? What attracted you to blogging?
djchuang (08:56:55 PM): back in 99 there wasn't blogging.. so, it was a spur of the moment, stream of conscience thing..
wwoo2000 (08:57:21 PM): oh, all notepad and html?
djchuang (08:57:38 PM): yes, mostly still that.. am looking to upgrade to either pmachine or movable type this summer
wwoo2000 (08:58:08 PM): Are those similar to blogger?
djchuang (08:58:38 PM): so back in '99, it was about journaling online, as i'm of the philosophy of being an 'open book', so i ramble in the open
djchuang (08:58:53 PM): easier for me to do it via web than in person, it seems, sometimes..
djchuang (08:59:17 PM): yes, pmachine and movable type are other 'brands' of blogging software..
wwoo2000 (08:59:53 PM): How transparent or open should one be in blogging? Do you think there are limits?
djchuang (09:00:05 PM): no i don't, but that' sme
wwoo2000 (09:00:13 PM): ?sme?
djchuang (09:00:19 PM): that's me
wwoo2000 (09:00:26 PM):
djchuang (09:00:30 PM): (you have to make allowances for typos w/ IM, you know)
wwoo2000 (09:00:50 PM): yeah, sorry, I'm in a very formal mood
wwoo2000 (09:01:13 PM): how long do you want to chat, I know your on eastern standard time
djchuang (09:01:38 PM): have about 15 mins left
djchuang (09:02:01 PM): formal? IM? ironic!
wwoo2000 (09:02:12 PM): oxymoron!

djchuang (09:03:08 PM): here's my first blog entry.. dated 6/21/99
djchuang (09:03:09 PM): reflections: I don't know how they do it, but here's how I'm going to do it There is a slow growth in the number of personal web pages, most of them big on the cheeze factor, but some of them are very cool, borderline on eye candy status. One of the interesting features is personal journals, where the guy or gal shares his/her rantings and ravings and chatty stories of what's happening in their life. But this one will be different. This one will have an edge. This one will be reflective and substantive. Not too much fluff here, and if you go away more than merely entertained, you will find yourself thinking, intrigued, and occasionally gain a new insight. Email me and join the conversation...
wwoo2000 (09:03:42 PM): ahh cool
wwoo2000 (09:03:55 PM): is that how your conversations with ?Christine started
wwoo2000 (09:04:03 PM): about relationships
djchuang (09:04:34 PM): you can prob scroll back to the first emails on that exchange to see.. it's some 33-pages printed (not the team blog, but the email exchange from 7 yrs ago)
djchuang (09:05:28 PM): text titled "Relationship Theory", on right column of team blog, if you hadn't read it yet..
wwoo2000 (09:06:36 PM): y'know I started reading, but dont remember...if I may change the subject, do you think that the Church and the Internet are going to grow into each other. Is it possible to have a church online or do we need to phyically interact with people
djchuang (09:07:38 PM): i think a good synergy and interaction can happen with internet and church
djchuang (09:07:57 PM): that church can be enhanced by online interaction, and internet can feed into church
djchuang (09:08:28 PM): many (most?) church leaders think relationships can only be built in person
djchuang (09:08:41 PM): when in fact, i've found most in-person relationships to be rather superficial
djchuang (09:09:05 PM): yet online interaction can get engagement from some people much more quickly and substantively
djchuang (09:11:01 PM): irony at this juncture is: 60%+ of Asians are on internet, more than any other ethnic group; yet Asians seem most resistant to conversations online
wwoo2000 (09:11:34 PM): I recently heard a minister talking about "Internet Missionaries" who go into forums, chat rooms and do the apologetic/evangelism thing. In a way it felt like this gives weight to the internet, cuz like a Pastor is taking the cause, but I know that many individuals have embarked on their own (or were called already).
wwoo2000 (09:12:24 PM): Hey interesting stat?
wwoo2000 (09:12:36 PM): that you posted, sorry so into my thoughts
djchuang (09:13:11 PM): beauty of chat is multi-threaded thoughts, as you get more accustomed to it..
djchuang (09:13:37 PM): yes, there are some Christians engaging online w/ evangelism and such
djchuang (09:14:02 PM): Rick Warren put it this way: we can have fellowship face to face _and_ keyboard to keyboard
wwoo2000 (09:14:22 PM): cool, very purpose driven comment!
djchuang (09:14:23 PM): case in point is Liquid Forums (but also, sad to say, it's an exception)
wwoo2000 (09:15:09 PM): yeah, I love the forums, did I mention that a new forums are going up for CCR
djchuang (09:15:36 PM): yes, you did.. look forward to see how career types engage online
wwoo2000 (09:15:59 PM): I wonder if being Asian makes online communication hard.
wwoo2000 (09:16:20 PM): cuz like these are Public forums, but like I'm sure people chat with close friends more readily
djchuang (09:16:43 PM): there is some of that, but it's a human problem really.. people generally tend not to talk to strangers..
djchuang (09:17:01 PM): Asians seem a little more inclined than norm to talk only to close friends.. hesitant to start new relationships..
wwoo2000 (09:17:20 PM): hey were you one of those kids who found it easy to talk to strangers?
wwoo2000 (09:17:34 PM): Like your cousins made you ask some stranger for the time?
djchuang (09:17:36 PM): never easy, but i like doing it
wwoo2000 (09:18:10 PM): oh, when I was a kid, my cousins would ask me to ask strangers a question that they themselves didn't ask, I thought nothing of it
djchuang (09:18:18 PM): didnt grow up around Asian context nor extended families, but had always had interest in people
djchuang (09:18:32 PM): good for you
wwoo2000 (09:19:13 PM): thanks
wwoo2000 (09:19:43 PM): well, I admit when I was on a listserv back in the old bitnet days, I was a little worried about my posts
wwoo2000 (09:20:03 PM): kinda nerve wracking
djchuang (09:20:14 PM): oh yeah? how so?
wwoo2000 (09:20:52 PM): It was an academic list, and we were told to make some comments/statements. this was awhile ago, perhaps I didn't want to get flamed

djchuang (09:23:36 PM): that's the thing about listservs (chat rooms, blogs, msg boards), is you have to know your own threshold of how much you're willing to stir things up + even be misunderstood
wwoo2000 (09:24:40 PM): trial by fire. Let's name drop. How big is your church? You go to church with Brian Mclaren?
djchuang (09:26:26 PM): yes, i'm at McLaren's.. it's running about 450 a Sunday, btwn 2 services..
djchuang (09:26:40 PM): been there about a yr now.. just attending..
djchuang (09:27:03 PM): closing thought.. you asked about 'calling', and for me even at this point of life (37yo)..
djchuang (09:27:11 PM): it's still a mostly fuzzy concept for me..
djchuang (09:27:35 PM): haven't heard good teaching about it.. and it's still seeping into my system.. supposedly The Call by Os Guinness is a really good book about it..
djchuang (09:27:40 PM): which i've read, and heard on audio book..
wwoo2000 (09:27:46 PM): Did you become interested in pomo preMcLaren or Post...fuzzy oh! we can con't later
djchuang (09:27:54 PM): but the whole calling thing is still elusive..
djchuang (09:28:30 PM): McLaren was one factor.. i'd been into "it" for several yrs prior to attending his church
djchuang (09:28:52 PM): one other big event was Young Leaders Network gathering in New Mexico in Sept 99 (?)
djchuang (09:29:12 PM): that was another big factor, and then other smaller factors that have stirred around.. Leonard Sweet another..
wwoo2000 (09:29:23 PM): hey that's in my neck of the woods,
wwoo2000 (09:29:39 PM): Defn. need more time to discuss calling. What do you think?
djchuang (09:30:11 PM): sure.. bookmark it.. have a good trip to El Paso
wwoo2000 (09:30:54 PM): Thanks! Many thanks for the chat, I'm going to post this on the conversations blog, with some editing
wwoo2000 (09:31:08 PM): I always tell J7 that!
djchuang (09:31:26 PM): great, glad to contribute
wwoo2000 (09:31:45 PM): have a good nite, and will talk to ya later
djchuang (09:31:58 PM): bye

A Camp for Adults?

C. is this year's CCR Coordinator. She is an active career woman who loves the Lord.

ww: I am starting another blog in which I have conversations with people care to answer some questions?
Christine: what kind of questions?
ww: How did you get involved in CCR?
ww: I was going to keep it all CCR related
Christine: i see
ww: to promote ccr?
Christine: would it be appropriate for our forums?
ww: yeah, why not
ww: I plan on posting stuff on the forums, why not an interview with you?
ww: So how did you get involved in CCR?
Christine: the planning part
Christine: ?
Christine: b/c i think i kind of stumbled into it
ww: oh, lets jump back
Christine: ok
ww: who are you in regards to CCR?
Christine: hmm....let me see what i wrote down before
Christine: had something like "coordinator" in it
Christine: (sorry, my computer is slow)
Christine: oh. i'm the "Coordinator"
ww: cool. No problem, I'm thinking of my next question actually!
ww: I guess we all stumble onto things apparently, at times, and perhaps that is how God gets us out of our comfort zones.
ww: Has the coordinating experience been good?
Christine: yes. i've been learning how to delegate tasks, trust the people God has put on the team. i am also learning when not to delegate a task
Christine: it's been fun and stressful and rewarding
ww: I am way looking forward to CCR, what can you say to get people to go?
Christine: besides what is already on the website , i would say that we all need times to be re-energized and that the retreat is an opportunity for us to relax and learn more about God's word; a time for us to encourage others and be encouraged
ww: Has this experience been beneficial for your fellowship?
Christine: it has been a good experience.
Christine: since i was traveling for awhile, this has given me an opportunity to re-connect with the young adults at church
Christine: i think for the group as a whole, it's given us something to work on where we really have to learn to trust God to help us complete it, to have something that is more outward-focused.
Christine: Also has given us an opportunity to use the gifts God has given us that were not being used in the current areas of ministry
ww: I hear there is a video, will it be in our packet of materials that we are receiving this week in our churches?
Christine: yes
ww: kewl
ww: hey I can't think of anything more to ask? Any last comments/

Christine: main one is to check out the website
Christine: all of the information about the retreat is there, the team has spent a lot of time making a website that is fun and informative
Christine: join the forums
Christine: spread the word about CCR!
Christine: and also be praying
Christine: for the speakers, for the participants, the planning
ww: plannin to pray. Thanks Christine, I'm going to edit out extraneous stuff and post it tonight on the forums
Christine: [smiley face]
Christine: thanks!

ww: cool. Take care n hope to talk to ya soon
Christine: same here
Christine: see you in the forums!
ww: not if I see you first!
Christine: [smiley face]

Informal Conversation With An Old Friend

I had already been posting conversations with this insightful young woman (who can really giggle online) on my blogspot and Xanga. It occurred to me (I had another epiphany) that it would be cool to talk to different people and post what they have to say.
